Giuseppe Verdi: Messa di Requiem

Postby Lunatico9 » Wed Jan 08, 2014 8:37 pm

In a Italian patriotism mood, I share with you this masterpiece from the italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, composed in memory of the writer Alessandro Manzoni who was the author of the famous novel "I Promessi Sposi" ("The Betrothed").

Directed by the also italian (lol) director Claudio Abbado, who was the director of the world-famous Berliner Philarmoniker at the time of the recording.
I personally can't choose between this and Mozart's version of the Requiem which is here on the forum already. You pick your favourite!

Enjoy!

I. Introit et Kyrie (chorus and solists)
II. Dies Irae:
- Dies Irae (chorus)
- Tuba Mirum (chorus)
- Mors Stupebit (bass)
- Liber Scriptus (chorus and mezzosoprano)
- Quid Sum Miser (tenor, mezzosoprano and soprano)
- Rex Tremendae (chorus and solists)
- Ingemisco (tenor)
- Confutatis (bass and chorus)
- Lacrymosa (chorus and solists)
III. Offertorium
- Domine Jesu Christe (solists)
- Hostias (solists)
IV. Sanctus (chorus)
V. Agnus Dei (soprano, mezzosoprano and chorus)
VI. Lux Aeterna (mezzosoprano, tenor and bass)
VII. Libera Me (soprano and chorus)
- Libera Me
- Dies Irae
- Requiem Aeternam
- Libera Me
Vi victa vis (Sthrengt is only beaten with sthrengt)
- Cicero

This recent BBC performance is pretty good.

I love the Tuba Mirum. So massive sounding. Shall we move onto Brahms next?

Oh yeah I've seen this performance already but it's too overcrowded with people coughing so the quality of the sound is lower... but the singers are better here, no doubt.

Tuba Mirum is the best part IMO, it's a crescendo of power and strenght
